Books #60 and 61 of 100: Life As We Knew It; The Dead and the Gone

Life As We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer is phenomenal! I couldn’t put it down. An incredible point of view from a sophomore girl, Miranda, who survives an asteroid collision with the moon. I won’t tell you anymore, but WOW. I was in awe of the craft of this book, totally swept into this world, and even as I was interrupted by a phone call, felt the effects of this world on me. I felt the isolation, the cold, the hunger. Really well-done. It sounds dark, right? It’s actually really good and though-provoking. Not to cause anyone to rush out and stock up like it’s a rerun of Y2K, but just to remember how perfectly poised our earth ecosystem really is. And what would we do if something changed? The representation of a Christian pastor who encourages his congregation to starve and bring him food jumped the shark, however. I know of NO Christian pastor (who really does exemplify Christian ideals) who would do such a horrible, selfish thing.

Grade: B+

The Dead and the Gone was much more dark, but so much more realistic in how it treated religion. The Hispanic community runs with a lot of help from the local parish priests and I loved that element in this story. However, this book was really hard to picture. Perhaps because it wasn’t in journal form? And the author excelled in her journal form in the first book. I’m not sure, it’s still an excellent story, but I missed a lot of the detail I got from the journal. Set in the city rather than in the rural small town of Life As We Knew It, you won’t be as swept away like the first book, but you’ll still be really happy to see the survivors and their sheer courage.

Grade: B
