Mental Health Break: I’m Mentoring Today

I’m mentoring two fledgling middle school writers today. Their grandma is driving them here from out of state. I’m looking forward to it. Why?

1. Sharing my story is something I can do. I can’t share other people’s stories; I can only share what happened to me.

2. I’ve wanted to write since I was very young (before middle school). My mom bought me a book while in middle school about how to be a writer that I then hauled around for the next decade, hoping it would inspire me to greatness.

3. I was told when I was college aged that girls shouldn’t write. That because we weren’t men (and thus weren’t leaders), it would be too much pressure for me. What a bunch of hooey. I still think this is the stupidest thing any pastor has ever said to me. I would say in reply to those who are tempted to agree with the reasoning, “Says who?”

4. I have allowed daily life to crush my creative artist side.
Now that I’m working to recover it, I feel all the more how important it is for us to encourage young artists, especially young girl artists, to continue to dream and create and envision.

5. These rules are not just for home schoolers. Every young person should be encouraged to pursue something creative, whether that is writing, painting, music, cooking, sports, design, even marketing these days has become ultra creative. Our future generation will need to be artists to make it in the business world. Less attention will be placed on MBAs and technical skills, because without the creative artist, as Darwin indicated at the end of his life, “there is nothing in me; I am blind.” (Darwin could only deal with science, not art, to the peril of his brain when he was old.)

Have a wonderful day! It’s creative artist day at my house!
