God Loves Haiti, Mr. Robertson

We should follow His example, I think.

I’m disgusted by Pat Robertson (and Danny Glover, to be fair) this week. I’m not even going to repeat what Robertson or Glover said. It’s completely misguided and far-fetched and doesn’t even remotely DEAL with the real situation.

If you want to talk about judgment, perhaps we’d all better point a finger at ourselves first. If God were really in the business of judgment as Robertson says, OUR country would probably be first on the list. We have EVERYTHING and still it’s not enough.

And then Robertson sidestepped the Bible when he forgot about the fact that WE all–not just one country or one person–fall short, every day, minute by minute, unable to humanly accept the fact that we do sin, we do mess up, we judge someone else, we lie, we cheat, we think evil thoughts about our enemy, we lust, we lose our tempers, we covet, we despair, we hold ourselves as more important than anyone or anything else on earth–must I go on?

I am weary of these “ministers” NOT MINISTERING. I know Robertson’s group does a lot for the hungry and suffering in this world, but every time the man opens his mouth, I cringe. We can give and give and do so much, but if what comes out of our mouths is this, aren’t we tearing down everything we’re attempting to build?

It’s fitting then that I simply point you back to my post from yesterday. To a man who was murdered for these views, who loved everyone, was human, was very AWARE that he was human, but who made sure his WORDS inspired. Actually I’m going to repeat the words, because I want us to think on them today (forget Robertson, please) and never forget them:

“With this faith, we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope. With this faith, we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith, we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day.

“And when this happens, when we allow freedom ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God’s children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual:

Free at last! Free at last!
Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!

Back tomorrow with a writing update.

As long as MLK’s words sing out, it will drown out the other. :)
