I can’t stop thinking about the things I read in this book.
Plus my uncle was here this weekend visiting. We spent the weekend talking about his trip to Malawi last year and his upcoming return trip in the fall. He’s trying to raise money to get a well dug for a village out in the sticks (with many, many orphans of AIDS) so that instead of drinking groundwater infected with human waste, these people can drink good water. The orphans need blankets. Hundreds of women in Malawi need microloans in order to start their business to feed their families.
And I’m sitting watching the news and they interview the Bachelor (who looks really nice, but really? really? you are going on TELEVISION to find your true love?) and I realize how my life must look to any alien species who might be looking down from their faraway planet. Human beings on one side of the planet who have everything and other human beings on the other side of the planet who have nothing. And those who live in those faraway countries don’t even know what they’re missing.
Not much, says I.
I get caught up in things that are the pinnacle of my day (gossip, writing, vacuuming, laundry) without even a second thought. Wow, I have a good life. Instead of spending 25 on two books (or one hardback) at the bookstore, I could help someone somewhere enlarge their business. Not much money makes all the difference.
Yep, I just discovered Kiva.org. I can’t stop looking at it. It’s so inspiring. I know I’m behind the times. I’m slow. Other friends of mine have been sending me this link for years and I ignored it.
Well, here’s my public confession: I am a lender at Kiva! Proud to say it.
Would you be interested in doing the same?
