Book #44 of 100: Half the Sky: Turning Oppression Into Opportunity for Women Worldwide

In lieu of a Friday Fiver (I’m getting bored with them these days), I’ve got a book that was really quite breathtaking, horrible, and shocking to read recently. Husband and wife team Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn have created a masterpiece that is both troubling and inspiring. The book is a call against oppression against women and girls around the world. Story after story of overcoming the worst situations and persevering and you will be just swept away.

Half the Sky: Turning Oppression Into Opportunity For Women Worldwide reminds me often that I cannot just sit idly by and let my life become this easy, comfortable living when other women need my help, my support, my solidarity. It’s not a revolutionary thing (well, maybe it is), it’s more of an awareness. I’m blessed right now. I might not always be so blessed. (Do we really think America is the center of the world?)

If I were suffering, wouldn’t I want someone who had it better than me to think of me?

Incredible book. Moving, hard to read, but this should be required reading for everyone. It will change your life.

Thanks for the recommendation, my friend. I have a request in for it at the library now. :-)
