Travel: Finally Some Pics of Alaska

Glacier Bay, Margerie Glacier

We didn’t take this one, but it’s the best shot we’ve found of the entire glacier that we visited.
Our boat parked right in front of it and just sat there for a few hours. The varying colors of the water are because of glacier marl in the water (the green) and the brown is the sediment. Very interesting to sail through. These colors don’t mix at all. The birds were floating in and out of this. The crew turned off all the boat music and engine so that we could hear the glacier crack. It grows six feet a day. So it really moves.

Glacier Bay was our favorite. Todd set up the video camera and then had his DSLR going the entire time. It was just a lovely, calming experience. You are in awe of the wonders of earth.

This is the tram that took us up into the mountains as Juneau is a very small bit of land tucked into a cove. The entire town is really long, not wide. We had fun on the promotional scavenger hunt to collect our four Alaska ceramic coasters (free!). We saw the state capitol building and the governor’s home. Juneau is a great town. We enjoyed our visit very much.

Here’s our port of call: Skagway. The view from our train that took us up into the Yukon. Gorgeous views and what a fun ride! It was a really interesting history lesson!

And a clear picture of Ketchikan (we didn’t take this shot). Our visit ended up being rainy as soon as we got off the boat. But it was fun to browse in the shops and just poke around town.

We were in awe of Jenny Butchart’s work of art. At dusk when the lights are lit up, it is a magical place where you think you’ve just entered into another world. Total proof that you can make lemonade out of lemons (this was an old concrete quarry). (Our pictures didn’t come out this good; this isn’t ours.)

Our home on the sea for a week. We really loved the ship (beautiful) and were so glad to get such lovely accommodations on our first ever trek to Alaska. Thanks, NCL!

Enjoy the weekend, everyone!
