SPACE: Making Time for Holidays

in SPACE

Family and friends know I have a thing for rocks. I have jars of them stored in the garage. Every nook in my house has a flower pot or serving platter on which I’ve dumped my rocks and shells saved from years of scavenging. Some rocks and shells came from my great-grandmother’s collection that I inherited. These were shells and rocks sent to her from missionary friends around the world. I like to think that I will add to this collection during my lifetime and then hand it down for others to enjoy. Right now, it’s just rocks, but I see so much more in my collection. I see color and texture and long years of travel via water, whether ocean or river.

We’re departing tomorrow for the San Juan Islands and this picture is from the beaches up north. I cannot wait to get out my rock-collection bucket and find more treasures. I don’t get many, as I think the best place for these rocks is to be left in place, but I do collect a few each time. My coat pockets are always heavier every time I go the area beaches. I can’t help picking up pretty rocks wherever I see them.

I think making time for rock-collecting is a vital habit in this busy-crazy-wild modern life we’ve created. Where else do we breathe? Where else do we stop and look at rocks? Where else can we rest?

Find a getaway in the next few days for you and your family. Look at rocks. It’s worth it.
