Three books this week:

Strange Piece of Paradise by Terri Jentz (who my writing teacher met this past week in Baja on a New York Times Magazine-supported writing retreat).
A scary read, one that happened in my home state of Oregon. In 1977, a stranger attempts to murder Terri and her friend while they are on a bike ride through the Oregon wilderness. This is the story of her attempt to find that stranger twenty years later. Not for the faint of heart. I bought it years ago on a whim and then shelved it. My writing teacher said Jentz is an amazing person and writer, so I’m reading it. I’ll let you know.
The Road to Middle-earth by Tom Shippey is a book I did not intend to pick up, but you know how bookstores are. <sigh> It’s the story of how Tolkien was inspired to write his fantasies.

And then last, but definitely not least, Quiverfull: Inside the Christian Patriarchy Movement by Kathryn Joyce.

So I started this yesterday and can’t put it down. I was inside this movement for a time, alas, though, my experience was most definitely patriarchy lite. I was introduced to all of these people through my time spent with Bill Gothard’s Advanced Training Institute. I am so grateful to God for His mercies on our family. We did not get sucked in to the mess and we are free today. Grace covers it all!
I do believe that the arguments over whether or not women should read aloud in church in front of men are so not the point. It’s like a red herring thrown up to get us all sidetracked and up in arms toward each other. Great book, very well done and Joyce is an excellent writer. She tells the truth, but with such grace and sensitivity. As an Amazon reviewer commented, those whom she writes about will not return the same grace to her.
One of my favorite writers, Susan Wise Bauer, and her husband, Pete Bauer, make an appearance in this book, which is why I picked it up in the first place.
